Why Do We Need Social Bookmarking?

First of all, what is bookmarking? It is pretty simple actually. It functions just like when you bookmark a website or web page on your web browsers. The difference is, you get to do it online and share with every one with the help of tags or keywords on sites such as Digg or Del.icio.us. Cool huh?

So, question is, why do we need social bookmarking? It is in fact one of the off-page search engine optimisation methods as it provides you with backlinks or inbound links to your site. Social bookmarking helps search engines find content through links thus providing a channel for the promotion of content. If you manage to place your links on do-follow social bookmarking websites, that is all the better because search engine spiders scour the sites and follow the links. This will help you a lot in your link building efforts and probably increase your PageRank as well.

Obviously it's not easy to find a do-follow bookmarking websites but I will name a few here later..bear in mind that famous delicious.com is not a do-follow social bookmarking website. So, what to do now since famous bookmarking sites are not do-follow sites?

Don't be dejected because the purpose of social bookmarking websites is not solely for building backlinks. On the other hand, the social bookmarking sites can help increase traffic brought in to your websites. Eventually, this will help increase your sales or website conversions and decrease your cost per acquisition. You must be wondering how in the world it helps? Well, social bookmarking works to market your online business in a viral manner. It helps to increase visitors to your website. People share content and urls with one another and they can even comment on them. This is Internet, the power of sharing! Readers tend to trust more on what they read and hear. So, the better the comments, the higher chances that you are able to sell your products or services to the readers.

In addition, bookmarking websites can actually help to "brand" you as long as you choose your niche properly and start building keywords and tags from there. When you produce articles or websites that are beneficial to the readers, people will know and remember you in that particular niche or industry. That's how you do brandings and carve your name in readers' minds.

Alright...so, let's start participating in social bookmarking websites today yeah! Here as promised earlier, some of the social bookmarking websites. I would advise you to try on every social bookmarking website regardless of whether it's do-follow or no-follow. It's too risky to just ignore the no-follow bookmarking sites because those are the most popular ones. Why do those sites opt to be "no-follow"? Well, in my personal opinion, they don't want people to misuse the true objective of social bookmarking - to share what you love. Spammers tend to spam after nowing that particular site is a do-follow site..so, no choice that most famous bookmarking sites will be a nofollow sites. Just to fend spammers off!
