How Does Business Bookmarking Differ From Social Bookmarking?

Social Bookmarking sites are online venues where everyone shares their favorite sites to create a huge collection of favorite sites about different topics. The site listings, like search engine listings are searchable or could be located by keywords, and also by tags.

Currently, the increasing popularity and competition have further added to the services of social bookmarking sites to offer more than just sharing bookmarks, such as rating, commenting, the ability to import and export, add notes, reviews, email links, automatic notification, web annotation, create groups and social networks, and collate business data. There are now social bookmarking sites that operate with a business function.

On a social bookmarking system or network, users store lists of Internet resources that they find relevant and useful. These lists can be made available to the public by users of a specific network or website. Other users with related interests can view the links by topic, category, tags, or even randomly. Other than web page bookmarks, services specialized to a specific subject or format, such as feeds, books, videos, shopping items, map locations, wineries, etc. - can be found. In a social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources that they find useful.

Business bookmarking is tagged as being a new, yet effective way to bring the advantages of social networking to enterprise and business data. The effect that the PC, networking and the Internet have had on productivity gains and profits is something that most web users and business owners are familiar with.

Surely, the ability to collate large volumes of data, run analyses and have all sources of new data and transactions on a single application have changed many of the ways that businesses are run. And with that development brought significant changes in business operating models. For computer giant Dell, for instance, direct selling, lean inventory model would have been impossible without the presence of these new bookmarking technologies.

Business bookmarking is basically essential data processing; automating the processes of collecting, collating, verifying and regulating organizational or company data. Large quantities of managerial time in organizations now revolves around improving knowledge; through search, data mining, data sharing and other methods take up a huge part of a businesses' activities.

Social bookmarking however does have its own share of mishaps, such as the probable misinterpretation due to lack of actual tags that can be easily linked with the words applicable towards a particular business definition or objective. While this is a calculated risk that can be seen, it would be advisable for small businesses to develop tag points that quickly and directly associate it with the business entity.

Small and medium-sized businesses would want to lower the expenses to be incurred in every available way that they can. It is clear that small businesses are currently just testing the waters before going full steam and engaging in more serious and larger business competition. Such would be a good trend today considering that the risks associated in putting up promising businesses would go the wrong way if they are not analyzed and supervised properly.
